When you mix a whole foods market with a cozy brunch café, you get something wonderfully unique—One World Deli. It’s a refreshing concept that blends healthy dining with mindful shopping, offering a shop/bar/café/bakery all in one beautifully curated space.

I visited their branch in Alabang West, and I was instantly charmed by its relaxed vibe, natural aesthetic, and impressive lineup of fair-trade, thoughtfully sourced goods. From organic snacks and beverages to premium meat and poultry, artisanal confections, and clean personal care items, the selection truly celebrates conscious living.

If you’re planning a Manila trip, don’t forget to add this must-visit brunch destination to your itinerary! It’s the perfect spot for good food, good finds, and good vibes.

Phở Bò (Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup)

On a rainy Saturday afternoon, my friend and I found ourselves craving for a warm bowl of traditional Phở soup. Nothing beats a serving of heartwarming soup when the weather is moody and threatens to crash all your weekend plans. We remembered seeing this new, homely Vietnamese street restaurant in front of the Jaro Small Market in Simon-Ledesma St.

Despite the threat of another impending downpour, we made our way to Simon-Ledesma Street. Hong Viet looked like something right up our alley! No fancy decor or expensive ambiance means the food must be good and affordable. We loved the kitschy Vietnamese music blaring from the speakers and the delightfully tacky wall decor that gave off a cacophonous Ho Chi Minh city vibe. The place is run by Vietnamese expatriates so we anticipated the food to be authentic, homestyle and unfussy.

The menu offered basic Vietnamese comfort food--beef noodle soup, rice paper rolls, dry noodles, Banh Mi, omelette bread plus iced Vietnamese coffee and tea preparations. There is nothing in the menu that's over Php 200 so it's definitely a commuter friendly eatery.

The Phở was aromatic, mildly spicy and meaty. However it lacked the essential coriander herb garnishing that is ubiquitous in Vietnamese cooking (it’s an herb I'm sadly allergic to). Instead,  Thai Basil was the convenient substitute that lent a pleasant flavor layer.

Hong Viet's Banh Mi was surprisingly basic, not the extravagant sandwich I'm accustomed to seeing. It's a budget version but still satisfying and filling despite the super chewiness of the baguette. The bread needs more toasting though. It was chewy enough to yank your dentures out.

The eatery’s coffee and tea selections are as authentic as it gets. If you want to try some traditional beverages and noodles at home, they have items for sale such as pandan and chamomile tea, coffee and instant Pho noodles in several variants.

The owners told us they will soon be launching Vietnamese snacks like savory pancakes to go along with their coffee menu. That's something to look forward to!

Hong Viet is open daily from 8 am to 8 pm. Grab a bite of their Com Tam breakfast special if you happen to swing around Jaro Small Market that early.

Another requisite cafe to add to your list of secret but stylish hangout places. Manifesto Cafe at Citadines Amigo has a eclectic, casual feel and great food to boot. Away from the maddening crowd yet located in the heart of the city, one feels wonderfully insulated as one enjoys hearty all day breakfast plates and specials.

The Citadines Amigo branch in Iloilo City is Manifesto's first store outside of Metro Manila with branches in Makati and Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. Manifesto is definitely a taste of Manila in laidback Iloilo City. They also serve the best French Toast in Iloilo City and Flat White coffee! Said like a true Ilonggo, once I like the food and atmosphere I will surely be back again! I look forward to trying their breakfast buffet soon.

I had my first taste of Eduardo Taqueria’s insanely delicious burritos and tacos at a now defunct foodpark near Angelicum School in Jaro and I have been hooked ever since. Flavor wise, Eduardo’s home-style Mexican dishes  are as authentic as it can get as the owners have lived in the United States and have brought home the authentic taste of real South of the Border flavors for Ilonggos to enjoy.

The food park eventually closed but Eduardo Taqueria continued operating a thriving cloud kitchen right at their home in Gran Plains Subdivision which is a stone’s throw away from our house. Then the COVID-19 pandemic struck and those of us working at home would always find ourselves craving for the deeply satisfying flavors of Eduardo’s Taqueria’s buttitos, fajitas and other tastebud tingling dishes.  Orders  were coursed through their Facebook page and fulfilled via Maxim Delivery. A few years down the line, Eduardo’s opened a home restaurant that can seat approximately 20 patrons at a time. A small and cozy place with festive touches of colorful Mexican inspired art such as a pop art Virgin of Guadalupe as well as colorful Papel Picado buntings. Unlike the delivery menu, dining at the restaurant offers a wider choice of dishes, drinks and even dessert.

So we find ourselves craving for Mexican food and despite the scorching hot muy caliente noontime weather, we head over to Alusiman Street in Gran Plains to enjoy a cozy meal. I am flexitarian and don’t eat meat so I’m really happy that there’s shrimp in the menu. Shrimp fajitas, burritos, quesadillas! Aye, aye, senor!

The food is on the pricey side but worth every centavo! It’s value for money and the restaurant does not scrimp on ingredients. Muy bien!
