Recently, I have been inspired by the slice of life vlogs of women living alone in woodland cottages, tiny houses and apartments in picturesque places like Tokyo and Stockholm. In particular, Paola Merrill aka The Cottage Fairy has been an absolute inspiration in my quest to create an outlook that romanticizes an otherwise boring life.
To begin with, romanticizing life does not require that you live in a charming Cotswolds cottage with Cath Kidston aesthetics. Wherever you are in the world, you can still find beauty in the hardest places and draw in courage, inspiration and optimism.
For small city women like me, I believe it is possible to create and curate an inspired life that makes ordinary things more exciting than they really are.
That being said, let me share my experience in romanticizing my daily life:
- Pinterest has always been my happy place. I joined this platform when it was still in beta format. Through the years, I have collected beautiful and fanciful images shared by artists, writers and dreamers around the world.
- I enjoy decorating my office workspace with things that spark joy and motivation (thank you Mari Kondo). I try to fill it with inspiring quotes and interesting artwork to uplift my energy.
- I have been enjoying the beauty of newly renovated plazas and squares in the city. I would go for a walk, sit on a bench and listen to my favorite playlists on Spotify. I try to tune out all that is chaotic in the world.
- From childhood to adulthood, I have cultivated homely and old fashioned hobbies like sewing, crafting and making handmade gifts for friends and loved ones. I try to integrate these activities to weekday routines.
- I get in touch with my inner plantita. After the pandemic, I continued to care for the plants that I purchased. The thriving plants remind me of resiliency during tough, challenging times. Watering my plants in the evening is always a therapeutic experience.
- I try to seek fellow romantics whom I share a love for slow, mindful living. I am lucky to have friends who share my vision.
- I love to explore art and historical periods that I gravitate towards. I have always been drawn to Jane Austen's regency world.
- I enjoy traveling and seeking authentic experiences that otherwise I may never experience in your own hometown or country. Have you been always inspired by Nordic or Japanese lifestyle? Maybe it's time to visit Copenhagen or Tokyo. I love Japan and I try to visit at least once or every two years.
- Regardless of what's happening in the world, I try to see world through a soft, seasonal filter even if I live in the equator. In my own world, it will always be spring and autumn.
